Organisational Behaviour in Small Business
This article discusses the role of organizational behavior in small business. Organizational behavior is said to be an academic discipline which attempts at understanding, controlling, describing and predicting human behavior in the environment of any organization. From the early classical management theories in a totally complex school of thought, organizational behavior has been evolved.
• Organizational Behavior is the study of individuals and their behavior within the context of the organization in a working atmosphere. It is an interdisciplinary field that includes sociology, psychology, communication and management.
• Organizational behavior, can be understood as the academic study of corporate culture and its various elements, as well as other important components of behavior such as organization structure and organization processes
It is true that understanding the behavior of one individual is in itself very challenging and if one has to understand a whole group of people then it is really a difficult thing to do. Eventually, organizational work gets done by the behavior of the people - may it be individually or collectively, either in association with technology or on their own.
• Organizational behavior scientists study four recognized areas of behavioral science: group behavior, individual behavior, organizational structure and organizational processes.
In any small or large business, the manager plays quite an important role and the manager must have sufficient knowledge to make some of the important business decisions. He or she must introduce the standard concepts and terms for the communications essential for the business.
So how is organizational behavior in small business important? The owners of the small businesses, not having the resources of large corporations, have to sell off, face tough decisions to stop their business. They even face difficulties in reopening their business.
• Disasters are man-made and natural. A recent data shows that natural disasters affect more than 30% of the small business and 10% small business has been affected by man-made issues.
• Most disasters reflect long-term problems actively ignored or simply not seen by the organizations charged with protecting the public.
• Organizations are generally reactive, because being proactive means making difficult choices over funding and priorities, choosing from risks, and a basic inertia in organizational routines.
An effective manager should develop diagnostic skills and must have the training to identify the conditions indicative to a problem that needs further attention. The problem indicators are like declining quality and quantity of work, declining profits, negative attitudes of employees, and increase in tardiness or absenteeism. Most issue of organizational behavior in small business includes each of these problems.
• Experts say that psychological and social psychological processes shaping human behavior and applied knowledge of these processes help in solving the problem of working with and managing others in organizations.
• Many problems of organizational behavior can be identified and rectified by a good manager who addresses these issues and brings them to the notice of the management.
Organizational sociologists like Tom Beamish and Anand Swaminathan of the Graduate School of Management who research on the industry evolution and the different strategies of the small business, have noted many changes.
• social movements and technological change affects team processes in organizations
• Organizational behavior advocates how to create value and foster change by coordinating employees within and between functional groups and coordinating activities across organizations.
